A bony canal in the basilar part of occipital bone

چکیده
The clivus (Latin: slope) is a curved sloppy surface between the dorsum sellae of sphenoid and foramen magnum of occipital bone in human skull. In the present study, a bony canal was observed in the clivus. There are very few reports in literature about the presence of a bony passage in the clivus. These bony canals if present may contain communicating veins between extracranial and intracranial venous plexuses or remnant of notochord during life. The knowledge of this canal has a great importance for neurosurgeons, radiologists and anatomists.

The clival canal.
In a skull of an approximately 35-year-old belonging to the didactical collection of the University of Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, it was noted the clival canal of the occipital portion of the clivus (Figure). According to recent descriptions1, a clival canal was identified in 1.6% of skulls and there is limited information on bony canals in the occipital part of the clivus. Moreover, the presen...

A 15-year-old girl with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and multiple bone fractures since early childhood presented with occipital headache. She had blue sclera and short neck (figure 1), right hypoglossal palsy, bilateral pyramidal tract signs, and gazeevoked nystagmus. Cervical MRI showed platybasia, basilar invagination, brainstem/high cord compression, and narrowing of upper cervical canal (fi...

Synapsida, the clade including therapsids and thus also mammals, is one of the two major branches of amniotes. Organismal design, with modularity as a concept, offers insights into the evolution of therapsids, a group that experienced profound anatomical transformations throughout the past 270 Ma, eventually leading to the evolution of the mammalian bauplan. However, the anatomy of some theraps...
متن کاملThe First Histological Analysis of the Tissues Lining the Fossa Navicularis: Insights to its Etiology
The fossa navicularis (FN) is an anatomical variant on the ventral surface of the basilar part of the occipital bone that, to date, has only been investigated in bone specimens. We aim to clarify the structure of the fossa navicularis by gross anatomical, radiological, and histological methods. The FN was found in the occipital bone of the Caucasian male cadaver. There was no bony or histologic...
